{How To} - Fabric Storage

I have been wanting to share this post with you for so long now and I finally got the chance to take pictures of what I've got going on in my craft room.  Now I will admit that I don't have the best system BY FAR!  But it is a system none the less and it works for me.  Hope you enjoy!

Today I am going to share with you all how I store my fabric!  And I hope you won't judge me by the amount of fabric that I have... you won't right? :)

I love love LOVE fabric remnants.  You'll see below that I am not kidding.  I should probably be in the Guinness Book of World Records for most fabric remnants.  Please let me know if you have a ton too so I don't feel like a crazy woman!  (Though this feeling apparently doesn't stop me from buying more fabric remnants...)  I think what attracts me to them is that I can get really pretty fabrics for a cheap price since you usually get less than a yard in there.  Many of the things I make are small items (check out my Etsy shop!) that don't need much fabric, so remnants allow for a lot of variety for me.  Plus you can buy like 10 of them and not feel guilty for spending a ton of money on fabric you don't need.

Onto the actual point of this post...

As you can see I use one of those hanging shoe storage things for my remnants!  I picked this one out because it has clear pockets for ultimate visibility!  It is absolutely perfect because I can easily see what I have when I want to and at all other times it is behind the door so no one else can see!  Plus this method of storage easily keeps me in check: no more remnants for me until there is an open spot!  And I can justify having all these because they aren't in the way AT ALL!

My next storage area is not as easy to hide... it is a mini bookshelf.  I have all my other fabric stacked up over here.  Not quite as easy to get to but I can still see what I have relatively easily and since it isn't super organized I can just throw a piece back on top of a pile when I'm done.

On to another tangent - can we just all agree that those uber-organized things you see on Pinterest are not realistic?  I mean initially they are great and pretty but once you have to actually use them it is way to much effort to keep them that way!  Maybe thats just me... let me know what you think in the comments.

Finally I will admit that I have yet another area I keep fabric.  I forgot to take a picture - in fact I forgot about it completely until just now.  But under the bed in my craft room is one of those long plastic boxes that are meant for under the bed storage.  This box is filled with random fabrics, a kind of project graveyard that I will hopefully get to someday.  So I never really use anything out of there day to day, but alas, it is there.

So how do you store your fabric?  I am hoping to revamp the bookshelf portion of my storage someday... so give me ideas!!

There's a First Time for Everything!

Well, well, well... I actually did it!!  I made my first dress without any pattern or tutorial!!  Now this may not seem like much of an accomplishment for some but for me this is amazing!  The dress actually fits and looks wearable!  I am just so excited!

The striped fabric used to be a body pillow cover if you can believe it, I like to buy any inexpensive fabric I can get my hands on!  For example, the body pillow cover was on clearance a Target for about $3 and I figure it was over a yard and I tore the zipper out of it to re-use!  Great deal!  Any way I used some fabric from that and then I had 1 yard of navy fabric in my stash which worked great for the skirt and there was just enough for the straps and a little bow too!

I can't wait to get more experience with clothes and finally be like a designer! 

Sorry for all the exclamation points... I'm just a little excited :)

Craft Shopping Is the Best!

I love to shop! But I really love to shop for crafting supplies! It is just so much fun to look around Michael's, Jo-Ann's and the like! They really have it all at those stores! Another gem I have found in my college town is Walmart... that's right Walmart! The Walmart here has a mini craft store in the back! They have a fabric section, scrap booking supplies, paint, patterns, everything! And all at amazing prices! I have to admit that their fabric is not up to par with the quality of that at Jo-Ann's, but for $2 a yard I really can't complain! So after visiting not one, not two, but ALL three of the stores mentioned above, here is what I came home with:

My latest obsession hobby is card making. When I was just a little pre-teen crafter wanna-be I made tons of cards... they were adorable (at least according to my mom) but very simple. Now that I am a more mature crafter I am getting in to stamping, embossing, layers, etc.

So you are not going to believe this but everything above was $1 or less each! Ahhh! Amazing! Buy everything! (at least that is what was going through MY mind). If you look at the 1st picture you can also see the clear stamps that I bought too. Believe it or not Walmart had the best ink selection, I wanted more colors but had to stop myself.

 The best deals of the day were in the adhesive family. At Target I got this pack of mounting squares for 70% off! Just $0.94! They are going to make some nice 3D effects on my cards! The next deal was actually at my campus bookstore. You never know what you might find if you look around for a while! These are like those white-out rollers except with double sided tape :O I know pretty awesome! But it gets better! They were normally $5.99 each and on clearance for $0.99! Thats 83% off! The only thing better than buying crafting supplies is buying them at highly discounted rates!

The next deals were my fabrics. Jo-Ann's had all their red-tag fabrics 50% off this weekend which means these were (starting from the left) $2, $3.50, $3.50 a yard! Gotta love great quality at a great price!
